Diet for acute or febrile diseases
For diseases in the initial stages
- Stop working altogether, but continue mild exercise.
- Eliminate meat, eggs, broth and wine from your diet.
- Drink the equivalent of two quarts a day, in small quantities, of herbal tea made of elderberry and barley.
For full-blown diseases
- Keep the patient away from crowds and noise and out of draughts.
- Fast by only eating panade (half a pound of bread, plus two quarts of water and a dab of butter) and cooked fruit.
- Drink three to four quarts per day of a beverage that quenches your thirst, brings the fever down and promotes bowel movements, urination and perspiration.
- Have the patient get up for one hour a day.
